Tonight was a turning point for the young elf, a time when he would meet a companion that would follow him for the rest of his life. It was an arranged marriage of sorts, where a soldier and a mythic beast were joined, linked to the point where survival could only be accomplished in tandem. It was an intimidating concept. Would he like his beast? Would the beast like him? A thousand questions fed from his own unvoiced insecurities flooded the young elf's mind. He was disciplined, physically and mentally tough, but he was also untested, and that more then anything fed his fears of being unworthy to carry his families legacy. Right now, as his bare feet crossed the soft earth surrounding the mystic pool, he could only hope his beast wasn't so observant as to pick up on it's masters weakness'.
It was then that the young elf realized that he had no idea who his beast, was, or more important, where to find it. The area around the mystic pool was desolate, the waning rays of light from the sun in the late afternoon cast the tree's in a shade of orange and made the small mystic pool sparkle brilliantly. It was a beautiful sight, though he had little reason to tarry in the open field any longer than he had to. This entire event was supposed to be a huge honor, but to Ariel and his family, it was just another inevitable step along the path to his future position as a royal guard. His fate was inevitable, so he saw little reason for his beast to delay him any longer.
"My name is Ariel Desmond Gray, of his Majesties Royal Army" he called out, his voice crisp and authoritative as though he were shouting orders to a subordinate. His announcement was met by nothing more the soft rustle of leaves caught in a brief updraft of the cool forest air. The world waited in silent apprehension as the seconds ticked on without any sign of response from Ariel's beast. The muscle in his jaw pulsed spasmodically as he ground his teeth in barely suppressed rage. He hadn't come this far, spent so much time training just to be brushed off by some animal with a self inflated sense of self importance.
"I know you’re here," he called again into the depths of the surrounding forest. His finger played nervously on the hilt of his fine sword, unaccustomed to having to face a problem that couldn't be solved at the end of a blade.
"Show yourself!" his booming voice commanded as at last his composure began to fade.
Why inquired a voice that had insinuated itself into his mind. It was a thoroughly disturbing experience. No one was supposed to get inside his head but himself, and the voice seemed as a trespasser in his most private of rooms. Of course it didn't help that despite the voice being in his mind, he was suddenly aware of a presence behind him, as though the voice had come from their, and not from within his skull.
The elf turned around slowly, the hairs on the back of his neck bristling as he debated whether or not to draw his sword. The young soldier swallowed hard as his eyes scanned the surrounding area, but the source of the voice remained unseen. The only clue, was the fact that every fiber in his being told him that he could find his unseen tormentor within the forest, lurking in the deep shadows of the massive trees. With one last deep breath to cement his resolve Ariel strode forward, his swift long strides covering the distance in a matter of seconds before his courage faltered. Within the shadows he could sense a presence, and it crippled him with indecision. It wasn't that the presence was evil, or even intimidating, but it occurred to Ariel that after today, there was no turning back. Whatever lurked before him was something he would have to deal with his entire life, no matter how terrifying, or in this case…..blue.
The expression on his face said it all, but he voiced his confusion at the sight before him anyone. "What the hell?" he asked as he saw a bouncing blue tail for a bout a fraction of a second before it disappeared with the sound of crashing branches.
Can I help you, Ariel Desmond Gray of his Majesties Royal Army? came the same soft voice as before. Ariel turned on heel, coming face to face with the massive head of a Chinese dragon. Its body was blue, with streaks of red and a belly of tan, and its features exuded an aura of intelligence and savagery. The beast cocked its head to the side as it waited for a response.
"Uhhhhh," came Ariel's reply. Much to the chagrin of the Blue Beast.
Glad to see I'm being paired with such an eloquent partner. I am known as Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikim
came the rolling voice of the Beast. Faced with such an impressive name all Ariel could do was blink, and then burst into laughter as Taumata's his large eyes attempted to divine some deeper knowledge from Ariel's expression.
"I think Blue would be more effective." Sputtered Ariel as he tried to stem the stream of laughter. He wasn't just laughing at the name, but at the ridiculousness of the entire situation. Sides still shaking Ariel walked passed the
That’s not my name replied Blue, as he trailed after Ariel, floating in the air like a wisp of smoke. THAT’S NOT MY NAME!
